BOC advises travelers on baggage tag ‘switching’

THE Bureau of Customs under Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno has advised travelers on the reported incidents online of baggage tag “switching” by taking precautionary measures before checking in their baggage at check-in counters prior to boarding their flights.

In a statement, the BOC said travelers can take simple precautions such as taking photos of their luggage before check-in, using easily recognizable markers on their bags, and keeping track of their belongings throughout their journey.

Some travelers may also consider using tracking devices for added peace of mind, the BOC said.

At the same time, the BOC stressed that its personnel do not handle or manage baggage tagging and they are not involved on matters related to the placement or switching of baggage tags.

“The BOC’s primary role is to enforce customs laws and safeguard the country’s borders.

“While these reported incidents are not linked to local operations, the Bureau remains attentive and continues to coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure the safety and security of all passengers,” the BOC statement added.

Based on available information, there are no confirmed cases of this incident occurring in Philippine airports thus far.

The reports appearing online are believed to be linked to cases that have taken place in other countries.

Public concerns may also be reported directly through “Isumbong Kay Commissioner,” the BOC’s online platform for receiving complaints and reports from the public.
