BOC using ‘AI’ to aid its trade facilitation thrust, PH competitiveness

THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) under Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno continues to launch various initiatives including the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in selected services to facilitate trade and enhance the Philippines’ competitiveness in the ASEAN region.

At the ‘ASEAN Growth Forum’ where he delivered a keynote speech last June 2, Commissioner Nepomuceno underscored the BOC’s commitment to the full digitalization of the Customs Processing System (CPS), including the integration of artificial intelligence in selected services.

The Customs Chief emphasized that these initiatives aim to promote greater transparency and strengthen the Bureau’s institutional and operational capacity, particularly in addressing smuggling and other illicit trade activities.

The forum held in Makati City was organized by European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), the ASEAN Business Advisory Council and Forv/s Mazars to help give participants strategic insight in cross-border transactions within the region as the Philippines takes the helm as ASEAN Chair this year.

Commissioner Nepomuceno stressed the CPS is designed to foster transparency and competitiveness, noting further that the BOC is fully committed, both institutionally and individually, to its effective implementation.

He underscored that this responsibility extends beyond exporters and importers in order to serve the broader interests of the Filipino people.

Commissioner Nepomuceno also highlighted the importance of sustained engagement with stakeholders, emphasizing that strong partnerships between the government and the private sector are essential in building a more responsive and efficient customs environment that supports trade facilitation and economic growth.
