THE CHINESE Embassy in the Philippines branded as “baseless” the latest provocation from disgraced Philippine Coastguard Commodore Jay Tarriela that China is engaged in “espionage” in the country.
Tarriela, whom the embassy described as a “full-time China-slammer,” made the unfounded remark in his social media page on March 7.
Embassy Deputy Spokesperson Guo Wei said:
“China firmly rejects the recent remarks by Jay Tarriela, which are entirely unfounded, logically flawed, and clearly aimed at smearing China with malicious intent.
“First, the allegation that China is engaged in “espionage” in the Philippines is a false premise, which is a presumption of guilt disguised as fact.
“In the past few years, so-called “Chinese spy” cases have either collapsed or been riddled with factual errors. Building on such a shaky premise, Jay Tarriela’s claim that China is extending “influence operations” to civil institutions is equally baseless.
“Second, China’s united front seeks to foster unity at home and promote friendship abroad.
“People-to-people exchanges and cooperation between China and the Philippines bring tangible benefits to both peoples.
“While China works to strengthen unity and friendship, Jay Tarriela sows division and provokes confrontation, as if he cannot bear to see China–Philippines cooperation or friendly relations between their peoples.
“Third, Jay Tarriela has long shown a pattern of anti-China rhetoric, disregard for facts, and lack of credibility. From maritime disputes to so-called “spies” and even the united front, he always sticks his nose in.
“He’s practically a full-time China-slammer, while the ones who really pay the price are the Chinese and Filipino people.
“China will continue to engage with all sectors of Philippine society in an open, confident, and constructive manner, promoting dialogue, exchanges, and cooperation.
“We remain committed to resolving maritime disputes through dialogue, while firmly opposing any groundless accusations or acts intended to disrupt China–Philippines relations.”
