THE Philippine racing industry went on mourning with the suspension of the scheduled seven races on Sunday, January 18, over the tragic death of Jockey Elvin EA Abrea during the sixth and penultimate race a day before.
In a letter to Philippine Racing Commission (PHILRACOM) Chairman Aurelio De Leon and the management of the Philippine Jockey Club (PJCI), officers of the New Philippine Jockeys Association (NPJAI), requested for the cancellation of the scheduled races that was to start at 3:00 pm, in honor of Abrea.
The PJCI manages the newly opened racetrack in Padre Garcia, Batangas.
Wearing jersey Number 5, Abrea was on top of the 4-years old filly, ‘Fly with the Wind’ when he was seen being dismounted from his ride and was accidentally ran over by ‘Official Seal’ who was coming from behind him.
Abrea’s death is the first recorded major accident at the PJCI racetrack since it opened in November 2025. He was just 33 years old.
