ABOUT 47,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFW) would be affected by the government’s decision to temporarily ban the deployment of first-time domestic helpers to Kuwait, the Department of Migrant (DMW) said (see also Pinoy Exposé, February 9, 2023).

DMW Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the estimate of the agency was based on the number of Filipino domestic workers that went to work in Kuwait in 2022.

“Last year, there were around 47,000 overseas household service workers who went to Kuwait. As we see it, around the same figure will potentially be affected within a year,” Cacdac said.

The temporary ban, Cacdac explained, would hold until the Philippine government had seen “reforms” for the stronger protection of OFWs in the Gulf State following the death of household helper Jullebee Ranara, who was killed, and burned by the son of her employer last month (see also Pinoy Exposé, January 25, 2023).

Cacdac averred the DMW would press for reforms in the upcoming negotiation for a new bilateral agreement with the government of Kuwait.
