THE ‘search’ for the country’s top policeman has ended after Malacañang on Thursday, May 29, announced that President Marcos Jr., has picked Criminal Detection and Investigation Group (CIDG) PMGen. Nicolas ‘Nick’ Torre III, as the 31st Chief PNP of the Philippine National Police.

At press briefing, Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, said the turnover of command ceremony between Torre and outgoing Chief PNP PGen. Rommel Marbil has been scheduled for June 2.

Torre would be making history in the national police force as the first graduate of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) to assume its top post. He graduated in 1993.

On the other hand, Marbil, of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 199l, has served as the 30th Chief PNP since his appointment last April 1, 2024.

Aside from citing the President’s “discretion” to appoint officials, Bersamin also defended Torre by brushing aside criticisms that he was chosen for his decisive role in the arrest of Pastor Apollo Quibuloy, leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) in Davao City last September 8, 2024 and the extra-judicial rendition to The Hague last March 11, of former president Rodrigo Duterte.

“He (Torre) was given an assignment. He was very professional. We should praise him for that,” Bersamin said, adding:

“Let us not judge him based on what he has previously done very excellently.”
