Midterm polls is a vindication for VP Inday, INC

THE result of the May 12 midterm elections clearly delivered the verdict that there is no way that the impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte can still be successfully prosecuted; it has also vindicated the principled stand of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) on the issue.

Simply put, the “numbers” needed to impeach her (16 votes) is no longer there and the entry into the chamber of majority of those endorsed by FPPRD further sank any chance of the impeachment even reaching the trial proper—the 20th Congress can simply throw out the complaint on a ‘technicality’ by simply declaring that under the rules, it can no longer act on matters that was left pending under the 19th Congress.

Sen. Jinggoy, whose family was also a victim of a bogus impeachment complaint that led to the illegal removal of his father, President Joseph Estrada in 2001, summarized what the impeachment process is— a “political exercise” that has always divided our nation—and coming at a time when there are far more important national problems to attend to.

The chances of the impeachment’s success is also blotted by the shocking revelation by Navotas congressman Toby Tiangco and Alyansa campaign manager, when he told the nation that majority of the congressmen voted to impeach VP Inday for the “money.”

That is, they impeached VP Inday in exchange for the release of their congressional insertions in time for the election campaign period. In short, greed, not principle, motivated them to ignore the people’s fondest wish for national unity as voiced by the INC.

That the nation is one with the INC’s call is shown by the victory of Cong. Rodante Marcoleta, who except for name recall, has nothing much to offer to the electorate in terms of money or machinery.

His victory—and the election defeat of many of those who ganged up on him during the notorious ‘Quadcomm’ hearings only last year—showed the maturity of our voters who can now differentiate between principles and political sycophancy.

A ‘New Era’ has dawned on the Senate.
